A museum curator travels to Italy and looks into a murder in this “fresh, funny [and] thoroughly enjoyable mystery” by the author of the Gideon Oliver series (Publishers Weekly).

Mild‑mannered and law‑abiding, Chris Norgren, curator of Renaissance and Baroque art at the Seattle Art Museum, is an unlikely undercover investigator, but when a priceless Rubens portrait is discovered in a shipment of “authentic reproductions” in a local warehouse, Chris is pressed into service to find out how it got there. The quest leads him to the medieval city of Bologna, one of his favorite places, but all too soon what might have been a welcome Italian interlude turns into a bizarre journey into shady art world doings and murderous secrets . . .

A Glancing Light The Chris Norgren Mysteries Book 2 edition by Aaron Elkins Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I'm a sucker for mysteries that center around art and museums. The protagonist, Chris Norgren, is a curator of Renaissance art at the Seattle museum, a position of some status, and thus is sometimes called to travel to Europe to authenticate paintings when the provenance might be questionable. This is a world in which fraud, deception, and thievery abound. Norgren does his best to wade through the miasma in which nearly everyone is lying or cheating or both. He may incur a few bruises along the way, okay, attempts on his life, but an impressive knowledge of his art subject, a charming naïveté concerning the danger he might be in, and shear stubbornness keep him going till the end.

The writing is excellent and the subject matter very well researched. My only disappointment is that there are only three books in this series! I'd happily read many more.

A Glancing Light The Chris Norgren Mysteries Book 2 edition by Aaron Elkins Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

But this is good and well worth reading. Well planned. Interesting. Amazing info re painting. I enjoyed it very much.
Chris Norgren is a wonderful travel companion who takes you behind the scenes in the international art world. The mystery is intriguing. The reader can't help picking up some insights into art, artists, and the business of creating forgeries Author Aaron Elkins only wrote three Chris Norgren books--if only he had continued the series! I would have read every one! I recommended the series to friends who are very picky about their mystery reading and they were just as delighted with the series as I was.
This book was my first Elkins but won't be my last. It includes decent writing, some mystery, some adventure and some humor, plus some art history. I look forward to more from this author.
If you are interested in art the book is good. If you are looking for reality, forget it so far as characters and situations are concerned. I find his writing slow, but, then I enjoy the art information. I wish he would make the characters more realistic and move the action along more rapidly.
Had to skip to the end. Round and round the art dealers of Italy. Our protagonist Chris is too cute. I guess this Elkins series is quite popular, but I'll stick with one's he writes with his wife.
There's a pair of good plots, but Norgren is just a spectator in the principal one. There's a lot of good art history and art market lore along the way. The writing and pacing are generally good. There's too much of Norgren's notions of his psychiatrist's opinions, and too much of Norgren's false modesty.
I loved all three of the Chris Norgren mysteries. (Of the three, this volume has been myfavorite!)This entire series of three has been my favorite read in some time, perhaps because I have simply tired of my usual forensic, medical and science based mysteries. Lately I have been reading a great deal of nonfiction material about art and the art scene today and these may have sharpened my interest in these tales which have appeared reasonably well researched. Each has presented an interesting segment of the criminal world impinging on the current art market in one fashion or another from forgery to outright theft by unsuspected sources! Much of the action occurs abroad adding another interesting element to the stories. Elkins clearly has drawn a likable main character in Chris Norgren, even adding a distant love interest. His secondary characters are also well drawn so you feel as though you can recognize them if you were to meet on the street, pointing out unlikely friendships as well as hard to believe behavior twists. In this tale the leading Italian police authority provides may interesting contrasts in his actions ranging from a bumbling cop to high ranking, polished and effective policeman.
I very much look forward to Elkins continuing this series, though I admit I have enjoyed the Gideon series of forensic anthropology novels as well!!!
